Roy Hoffman saw the new moon with binoculars.

I do not agree the moon needs to be sighted with the naked eye, for one reason alone.

The moon sets before sunset the day before the new moon every month. Its impossible to see the moon (after sunset) with or without binoculars before the moon is actually seen.

The Sun sets at 19:41. The Moon will appear at 19:34, 1 fist (101⁄2°) left of the sunset, 11⁄4 fists (131⁄2°) high. It probably won’t be seen by the naked eye until around 19:45
