So much for getting out of lockdown. Here’s where Israel is going next:
3:04 P.M. Netanyahu aims to extend lockdown, Israel’s overland borders to close
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would bring the Health Ministry’s proposal to extend the lockdown for a government vote, and that a decision will be taken according to current infection rates.
Netanyahu also said that Israel will close its overland borders. “We were the first ones in the world to close our skies and not allow any commercial flights inti the country. We’ll add to that the closure of overland borders, including the border with Jordan.”
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Arye Dery said Israel’s two border crossings with Egypt and the Jordan River Crossing will be closed from Thursday until Sunday.
The Allenby Bridge crossing on the Israel-Jordan border, however, will remain open for West Bank residents.
Speaking at an event in Sderot along with Netanyahu, Health Minister Yuli Edelstein said he had asked the prime minister to convene the cabinet to discuss extending the lockdown. âWe cannot abandon our medical workers in the hospitals with almost 1,200 patents in serious condition, and some 300 people on ventilators and patients in critical condition,â he said. âTo end the lockdown in this situation would be true irresponsibility.â (Judy Maltz)Updated Jan 28, 2021, 4:15 PM
